Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Health Promotion 4 year full time course in Waterford Institute of Technology
What is the BA (Hons) in Health Promotion course?
The BA (Hons) in Health Promotion is a full-time four year honours degree course. Health Promotion has been described by the World Health Organisation as “the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health”. Health promotion involves helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health. Crucially, health promotion also involves shaping public policy to ensure optimal health, and shaping environments to make it easier for people to be healthy. Empowering communities is also a core aim of health promotion. Thus, health promotion specialists work not just in the health or allied health sectors, but also work with a wide variety of population groups, and in a wide range of settings.
There is a 16 week placement in the third year of the course. This introduces the student to practical health promotion settings and provides the student with the opportunity to practically apply the skills they have gained on the programme. Students have been placed in the following settings: Health Promotion Departments and Occupational Health Departments in the HSE, hospitals, state companies and private companies, Youth Services, Disability agencies, Adolescent Health and Information Projects, Community Projects and Adult Education Service, and V.E.C.s. International placements are available.
