Description: This programme aims to educate pet owners in the holistic care of their companion animals. It will also introduce participants to different careers in animal care, e.g. veterinary medicine/nursing, professional grooming, running a kennels/cattery, offering a professional petsitting or dogwalking service, etc.
Course Content: INDICATIVE CONTENT
1. Basic Anatomy
Demystifying diseases, common problems and how to prevent injuries/illness.
2. Diet, Nutrition and Exercise
Healthy diet, forbidden/toxic foods, food allergies.
3. Health and Welfare
Costs of pet ownership, preventing diseases, Control of Dogs Act explained.
4. Animal Behaviour and Training
Basic commands and how to teach them.
5. First Aid
What to do in an emergency and who to call.
PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME
On successful completion of this programme, the participant will be introduced to best practice in animal care and be competent in their abilities to provide this care. They will also learn of the various career opportunities should they wish to gain further education in this line of study.
