Clarifications of ECCE Staff Qualification Requirements

The DYCA website states that:

Pre-school Leaders must hold a certification for a major award in childcare/early education at a minimum of level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications of Ireland (NFQ) or an equivalent nationally recognised qualification or a higher award in the childcare/early education field.  In the case of pre-school services registering with the Child and Family Agency from 1st September 2014, pre-school leaders must hold a certification for a major award in childcare/early education at a minimum of level 6 on the NFQ, and all staff working with children in the service must hold a certification for a major award in childcare/early education at a minimum of level 5 on the NFQ.   From September 2015, the pre-school leaders in ALL services participating in the ECCE programme will be required to hold a certification for a major award in childcare/early education at a minimum of level 6 on the NFQ, and all staff working with children in the service will be required to hold a certification for a major award in the childcare/early education at a minimum of level 5 on the NFQ.

Our Montessori Evening Course now includes a full Level 6 Major Award, Early Childhood Care & Education (6M2007). However graduates of our Montessori Nursery Course: 0-6 who completed the course prior to 2012, when successful graduates received our Montessori Diploma and 6 FETAC Component Awards, should not be concerned as the DCYA clarified their position in 2011.  They issued a letter to the College, see exert below, confirming that for the purposes of the ECCE programme a qualification in Montessori Education that consists of 6 FETAC component certificates would be considered as meeting the qualification requirement whether the requirement was for a full Level 5 qualification, or if it was increased it would be considered as meeting the requirement for a Level 6 qualification.

Exert from DCYA Email to the College November 2011:

However, for the purpose of the ECCE programme, a qualification in Montessori education which consists of 6 FETAC component awards at Level 6 will be considered as meeting the September 2012 requirement for a full Level 5 qualification.
In addition, should the qualification requirement for the standard capitation rate be increased at a future date, the component award as above will be considered as equivalent to that of a major award at Level 6 for the purposes of the ECCE programme only.

Important QQI Deadline for Claiming Exemptions

We would like to remind you of an important QQI deadline. In case you wish to use your existing FETAC component certificates to claim exemptions for the Major Award, Early Childhood Care & Education (6M2007), QQI have stated that these exemptions cannot be claimed after December 2015 and they can only be claimed on final completion of the other component certificates.  The implications of this are that learners will need to have completed all the (non exempt) modules by December 2015 in order to claim any of their exemptions.  After December 2015 they will have to complete all modules as exemptions will no longer be accepted.  See below for details of modules and exemptions.

As you know we offer the FETAC Level 6 Early Childhood Care & Education (6M2007) CAS major award with the following modules:
