Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Finance & Investment 3 year full time course in Waterford Institute of Technology.  It is an academic degree dedicated to the development of financial services professionals.

Course Aim

The course aims to develop financial skills through a course of analytical, numerical and financial modules as well as placing significant emphasis on professional skills – skills vital to the development of good financial professionals.

The first year of the BA (Honours) Finance & Investment provides a good grounding in business and financial practice.  The second and third years are specialist years focusing on areas such as investment policy & analysis, financial management, taxation, fund accounting, financial derivatives and econometrics, amongst others.

Although there is no mandatory work experience on the programme, it is strongly recommended that students pursue summer internship positions. The BA (Honours) Finance & Investment is included amongst a select number of undergraduate courses eligible to apply for summer internships with one particular International Financial Services Company based in Ireland.  We hope to expand our summer internship programme in the coming years.

Another option open to students from September 2014 is the flexible year.  The flexible year allows students to take a year out of college (between second and third year) to either work in the financial services industry or to study overseas.  Placements will be organised and monitored by the college placement officer and overseas study co-ordinator. Students who elect to take the flexible year will graduate after four years with the BA (Honours) Finance & Investment (Practice).

Mentoring is an important part of our students’ development potential.  Students are mentored through-out the programme.  Final year students may apply to be ‘matched’ with experienced finance graduates who provide advice and support to ensure a smooth transition from student life to career professional.

Qualifications

The ACCA accounting qualification is a recognised and highly sought-after qualification in the Global Financial Services Industry.  The BA (Honours) Finance & Investment is accredited with the ACCA.  Our graduates have exemptions in six out of the nine ACCA Foundation Level Papers.

Although the BA (Honours) Finance & Investment is a relatively new programme (first graduates 2010) our graduates are very successful in securing gainful employment.  The degree is highly regarded in the financial services industry.
